Outfit7 Limited has built a small empire for themselves with their Talking Tom and Talking Angela virtual pets, and Tom Loves Angela expands on the franchise by combining their two biggest brands into a single mobile experience. While traditional virtual pet simulators ask you to provide your pets with basic needs like food, play, affection and shelter, Tom Loves Angela takes a different tact. It puts you in the role of Cyrano de Bergerac instead, asking you to help the amorous gray and white feline win the affections of his female paramour. But it's not going to be a walk in the park. Regularly getting in your way is an opponent in the form of orange tabby Ginger.

The game play here may be simplistic, but the real selling point of this game is how Angela responds to the various advances of Tom. You can chat with Angela directly, and she'll provide you with fully voiced and personalized responses. In your quest to play Cupid, you have a lot of tools at your disposal. You can surprise her with gifts, make videos, or play karaoke, and every action is rewarded with cute but unpredictable responses.

This is a game that sells itself on the authenticity of the experience. A game like this that doesn't make you sympathize with its two main leads is one that's doomed for the trash bin, but the developer has done a great job of avoiding the uncanny valley. The faces are expressive and humanistic, but there's a lot of inspiration that's been clearly drawn from the classic eras of animation. The actions you take and the results they deliver take obvious inspiration from the golden age of animation. And while you can work through the majority of animations in a relatively short amount of time, the wacky responsiveness - which brings to mind Tom and Jerry and Merry Melodies - should bring a smile to your face.

Just don't expect to find a wealth of game play systems here. There's not much skill involved in the systems, and the general game play boils down to watching a series of pre-arranged scripts. There is a level of unpredictability here, as the same action won't always yield the exact response, but there's not a particularly large sense of player agency at work. Nor is there an end game. You aren't working towards a tangible objective so much as you're trying to work your way through the designated sequences. While that makes it a bit lackluster for gamers looking for a skill-driven and engaging experience, it's a great time waster, and one that should be equally as delightful as children as it is for adults.
